I have received a lot of queries recently about different medications that could be used to terminate or prevent a lady from getting pregnant. So I asked the question on my Facebook wall. One of the respondents then suggested Postinor 2 for abortion. The curious me had to do some digging, and I found some information which I have decided to share here.
I hope this will help our young people out there to understand the proper use of the drug and not necessarily believe that they can use Postinor 2 for abortion. Here is an aggregation of what I found on the internet when I searched for information.
First of all, let’s talk about abortion viz-a-viz the need to use a contraceptive pill like Postinor 2.
Abortion is a situation that arises most times from carrying unwanted pregnancy, and in other cases, medical reasons that threatens the life of a woman.
Unwanted pregnancy and subsequent abortion is usually a painful experience for every woman. Medical termination of a pregnancy (abortion) is legalized in some countries, and allowed only for medical reasons in other countries. Without getting involved into moral questions of abortion, the medical and psychological side effects of this operation should be enough reason to avoid it.
Abortion involves an opening and dilating (making bigger) of the cervix (the top part of the womb). A medical tool is used for suction out everything inside the woman’s uterus, including the fetus (embryo). It is important to realize that you are undergoing an operation, and its effects and risks might be serious.
Abortion can have an effect on your chances to get pregnant later, and fertility is probably the most important thing to a woman. Abortion made under not perfect medical conditions can results in getting infections, and not properly made abortion can have even worse consequences.
For this operation you need to take time off from work, studies or your daily routine, which obviously mean that people in your environment might learn about it.
Abortion is not just a simple medical procedure. For many women, it is a life changing event with significant physical, emotional and spiritual consequences. Most women who struggle with (or: haunted by) past abortions say that they wish to have been told all the facts of abortion before they had one.
Contraception is also known as birth control. It is a method or device used to prevent pregnancy. Birth control has been used since ancient times, but effective and safe methods of birth control only became available in the 20th century.
Contraception is a better alternative to abortion. You really do not need to wait to carry unwanted pregnancy before thinking of how to get rid of it. The better solution is to avoid it totally, and that is why you should go for contraception.
If you do not want to be on the sad part of abortion, it is better to face the better option of using a contraceptive like Postinor 2.
This is to make it clear that you should not use Postinor 2 for abortion, it is rather used to prevent pregnancy.
I did some searching which took me to the almighty Nairaland. Here is what I found:
“Postinor 2 is a medication to prevent pregnancy if sperm has been released into the ovary, whether intentionally or not. It can prevent pregnancy 95% in the first 24 hours after intercourse. It is used as a form of emergency contraception (more commonly known as a morning after pill).
Postinor 2 is formulated to function in a manner similar to the female hormone progesterone allowing for prevention of pregnancy if taken within a reasonable period of time. Generally, it is recommended that Postinor-2 be taken no later than three days after having unprotected sex.”
For further information, I also made an inquest into Postinorpill.com
The earlier you take the Postinor pill, the higher the chance to prevent pregnancy. Even though some people call emergency contraceptive pills “day after pills”, you don’t have to wait until the day after. You can take POSTINOR Aftersex pill right away or use it up to three days after unprotected sexual intercourse or if you think your birth control method failed.
How to take POSTINOR?
POSTINOR is a single pill solution: only 1 pill, and you can easily avoid abortion. There is 1 pill in the pack. You have to take the POSTINOR pill within 72 hours of having unprotected sex. (For 2 tablets version of POSTINOR: take the second tablet exactly after 12 hours after the first.)
Take it as soon as you can, the sooner the better!
The sooner you take it, the more likely it is to work. Ideally, you should try to take the tablet within 24 hours following unprotected intercourse, as this is when it is most effective. The efficacy of levonorgestrel Emergency Contraception Pills depend on how many hours have passed since you had unprotected sex.
If you’re worried about the possibility of an unplanned pregnancy, it’s important to act now rather than waiting till later.
When to take and not to take POSTINOR?
POSTINOR morning after pill is currently the safest way to prevent pregnancy after contraception failure or unprotected sexual intercourse, with low incidence of side effects. It is very unlikely that you will have any serious or long term side effects after taking POSTINOR. Usually you can carry on with your day as usual.
Do not take POSTINOR:
If you’re already pregnant, because it won’t work although it will not harm you or your fetus.
If you’re allergic to levonorgestrel or other ingredients in POSTINOR.
POSTINOR won’t protect you from HIV infection (the virus of AIDS) or other sexually transmitted disease (STD).
How often can I take POSTINOR?
It’s not a regular method of contraception. Try to use it rarely, in emergency only. But never forget: it has much less side effects and health risks than abortion pills or hospital abortion.
Generally speaking you should not take it more than once within one menstrual cycle.
If POSTINOR is used more than once in a menstrual cycle, it is more likely to upset your menstrual cycle (period).
POSTINOR does not work as well as regular methods of contraception. Your doctor, practice nurse or family planning clinic can tell you about long-term methods of contraception which are more effective in preventing you from getting pregnant.
If you are pregnant
Emergency pills do not work if you are already pregnant and will not harm an established pregnancy or the baby.
If you think that you are pregnant, see your doctor or family planning clinic as soon as possible.
If you have already taken POSTINOR once since your last period and you now find you are pregnant, do not take POSTINOR again.
What to do if I vomit after taking the pill?
After taking the emergency contraceptive pill, a few women (approximately 1 out of 100) will be sick (vomit).
If you vomit within 3 hours of taking POSTINOR, you need to take another POSTINOR pill. So, go back to your pharmacist, doctor or family planning clinic for another packet.
If you are sick more than 3 hours after you originally took the tablet, you do not need to take POSTINOR again.
How do I know it has worked?
You will know POSTINOR has worked when you have your next period and it seems like a normal period.
When do you have to turn to your doctor?
• When your period is more than 5 days late, or unusually heavy or light.
• If you are still worried that you are pregnant.
• When you have sudden or unusual pain in the lower abdomen and your period is late.
• If you have any concerns about your health or about the methods of contraception that is most suitable for you.
It is not without its side effects though, and those are what I have highlighted below:
EFFECTS OF POSTINOR 2
– When taken in the middle of the menstrual cycle, the preparation may inhibit ovulation.
– The pill can cause changes in the menstrual cycle in the lady. Your next period could start earlier or later than expected and flow can be lighter or heavier than normal.
– It can cause nauseating feeling which occurs in approximately 25% of users vomiting.
– It can also bring about bleeding disturbances in some cases, 2-3 days following tablet ingestion
– Sometimes it can cause breast tenderness, headache, dizziness, fatigue.
In the majority of cases the next period starts as expected or somewhat earlier, if the period is more than 7 days late, it is recommended to perform a pregnancy test.
In case of prolonged or heavy bleeding, gynecological examinations is advised.
If the user has a reported case of asthma, heart failure, hypertension, migraine, epilepsy, renal impairment, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidaemia, depression, and / or stroke, the preparation may be used exclusively in the above mentioned emergency cases. it is not appropriate for regular use.
The manufacturer of the emergency contraceptive offers the efficiency of the pill when it is taken as directed. Logically, the longer the interval between unprotected sex and taking the pill, the decrease in how effective it will be.
It is estimated that Postinor-2 will prevent 85% of expected pregnancies. 95% of expected pregnancies will be prevented if taken within the first 24 hours.
Contraception is a much better option than abortion! Do not use Postinor 2 for abortion, it is just a contraceptive!
