It is a belief in most quarters that Reeva Steenkamp can now rest in peace after justice was carried out today as Oscar Pistorius was found guilty of murder.
Pistorius was convicted of murdering his former girlfriend on Valentine’s Day 2013 and faces being sent back to jail until he is well into his forties.
The sprinter was not in the Supreme Court of Appeal to hear the decision of a five-strong panel of judges to overturn his manslaughter charge and impose the murder conviction. However, he is said to be ‘devastated’ at the ruling, which comes a month after he was freed to live at his uncle’s mansion in Pretoria – where he will remain under house arrest until he is re-sentenced in the new year.
Neither Pistorius nor any of his family were in court for the hearing, but June Steenkamp, Reeva’s mother, made an appearance alongside representatives of the ANC Women’s League, who she embraced outside the courthouse following the decision.
Miss Steenkamp, who has rarely betrayed emotion during months spent in court, said: ‘The court’s decision was respect for Reeva’s life and justice for Reeva. I have always had faith in God and the justice system.
